American Idol's General Larry Platt ,62, is overnight star. American Idol has uncovered a new star in the form of General Larry Platt, whose Pants On The Ground song is the year's unlikeliest hit.
Larry Platt is rivalling Susan Boyle as a YouTube talent show sensation. Within 48 hours of his appearance on television on Wednesday night, Pants On The Ground had been remixed and offered as a downloadable ringtone.
"I have a horrible feeling that song could be a hit," Simon Cowell said.
Platt was inspired to write the song when he saw a young man walking down the street with his pants hanging below his waist.
"He had his underwear showing. He was being disrespectful so I wanted to embarrass him, after all this work I did with Dr King - walking around with your pants on the ground? They're going to have to get them up. I'm sorry." explained Platt, a veteran of the civil rights movement who marched alongside Rev Martin Luther King.
He is hoping to record Pants On The Ground as a single. "Some people tried to steal my song but they can't sing like me. I'm going to go around the world singing my song," he said.
Jimmy Fallon used the song in his show on Thursday night, breaking into Pants On The Ground mid-way through his Neil Young impression.
